Sonic CD is a platform action game developed by Sega for the Sega CD add-on of the Genesis/Mega Drive. Widely regarded as one of the most ambitious titles in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, it introduced time travel mechanics, allowing players to explore past, present, and future versions of each stage. The story follows Sonic as he travels to the mysterious Little Planet, which appears once a year over Never Lake. Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) chains the planet to harness its power, and Sonic must stop him while facing the newly introduced characters Amy Rose (her first appearance) and the dark rival Metal Sonic. Gameplay combines high-speed platforming with exploration, where players can manipulate time by hitting “Past” or “Future” signposts at full speed, altering stage layouts and enemy difficulty. Each level can be cleared by destroying Robotnik’s machines in the Past, creating a “Good Future,” or by collecting all Time Stones. Known for its animated anime-style cutscenes, CD-quality soundtrack, and innovative level design, Sonic CD received critical acclaim. Today, it is often considered one of the best Sonic titles ever made, praised for its creativity and atmosphere.
