Narara Superboard: Hwansang Seoyugi, commonly known in Chinese as Fantasy Journey to the West or Huanxiang Xiyouji, is a Korean PC RPG released for Windows in 1998. It was developed around the Flying Superboard animated IP, which itself reimagines elements of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Hardcore Gaming 101 lists the game as a Windows RPG from October 1998, developed by KCTmedia and published by E2 Soft.
Although the game uses familiar Journey to the West figures such as Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Sanzang, it is not a straightforward adaptation of the original novel. Korean coverage describes it as a reinterpretation of the Flying Superboard IP with its own story, original characters, and independent worldbuilding. In practice, the game functions more like a fantasy RPG spin-off than a direct retelling of the pilgrimage to the West.
The story begins with a heavenly incident and gradually expands into a broader adventure involving sealed powers, lost objects, unusual allies, and hidden truths. One of the game’s defining qualities is the way it contrasts a colorful, cartoon-influenced surface with a surprisingly elaborate and sometimes serious narrative. Korean retrospectives note that, despite its accessible visual style, the game is remembered for its character writing, story twists, mythological mixture, and emotional impact.
In terms of gameplay, Hwansang Seoyugi is best described as a party-based RPG with tactical or strategy-RPG elements. Players explore areas, trigger story events, recruit companions, fight enemies, collect equipment, and develop their party over time. A Chinese-language archive identifies the localized version as a strategy role-playing game produced by Korea’s KCT in 1998, later localized into Chinese in 2000 by Gamania and published by Soft-World.
The appeal of the game comes largely from its ensemble cast. Each party member has a distinct personality and role, and the adventure gradually builds its identity through shifting party compositions, character interactions, and narrative reveals. Combat is less about fast action and more about party growth, weapon and item use, and managing the strengths of different characters. For players who enjoy older East Asian RPGs, this gives the game a familiar sense of progression: travel, meet new allies, survive difficult encounters, and slowly uncover the larger shape of the world.
The game is also remembered as a flawed classic. Korean sources mention that it was released during the IMF crisis period, with limited staff and funding, and that it carries signs of being unfinished. Even so, it has remained beloved among many Korean players because of its strong characters, memorable music, dramatic story, and unusual reinterpretation of a well-known mythological framework.
Overall, Narara Superboard: Hwansang Seoyugi is best presented as a Korean fantasy RPG inspired by Journey to the West and the Flying Superboard animated series. It is not valuable because it faithfully recreates the original Chinese classic; rather, its charm comes from how boldly it remixes familiar material into a strange, heartfelt, and distinctly 1990s PC RPG adventure.
