『三國志III』は、コーエーの歴史シミュレーションシリーズを代表する名作のひとつであり、シリーズ第三作にあたる作品です。舞台は後漢末から三国時代にかけての中国で、プレイヤーは複数のシナリオの中から君主を選び、都市経営、人材登用、外交、軍事行動を重ねながら全国統一を目指します。本作の大きな特徴は、前作までよりも「国」ではなく「都市」の支配と運営に重点が置かれている点で、より細かな内政感覚と勢力拡大の手応えを味わえることです。さらに、武将能力は知力・政治・武力・魅力に加え、陸戦指揮や水戦指揮まで細分化され、戦場では士気、兵科、時間経過、天候なども戦況に影響します。加えて、史実モードや仮想モード、自作武将の要素も本作の魅力として知られており、初期『三國志』シリーズの完成形のひとつとして今なお高く評価されています。
