アクティビジョンが手がけた回合制ストラテジーで、文明を石器時代から西暦3000年級の未来まで導くスケールの大きさが売り。通常の歴史進行に留まらず、**遺伝（Genetic）/ダイヤモンド（Diamond）**といった未来エポックまで踏み込み、“文明が未来へ行き切ったら何が起きるか”をゲームの手触りとして味わえる。
遊び方はシンプルに言えば、拡張・研究・外交・戦争の4X。特徴として、海洋・宇宙への殖民（海底都市や宇宙コロニー）や、産業化後に重くのしかかる汚染/環境災害があり、発展の“代償”まで含めて長期戦略を考えさせられる。
