《沙丘魔堡》是一款相當有特色的經典改編作品，它不像後來的即時戰略作品那樣把重心完全放在作戰與基地經營上，而是把劇情冒險、人物互動、資源調度與軍事發展巧妙結合起來。玩家將扮演保羅．亞崔迪，踏上厄拉科斯之後，除了要與小說中的重要角色交流，也要深入沙漠、整合弗瑞曼部族、擴大香料生產，並一步步累積足以推翻哈肯能勢力的條件。整體遊戲節奏偏重敘事與氣氛塑造，因此玩起來更像是在體驗一場帶有史詩感的沙丘旅程，而不只是單純地打仗或採資源。也因為它成功呈現出《沙丘》世界那種神祕、壯闊又帶有宿命感的氛圍，本作至今仍被不少老玩家視為最有味道的《沙丘》改編遊戲之一。
