《大航海时代2》于1994年推出。是《大航海时代1》的后续作品。剧情相当优秀，画面以及人物设计在当时也很优秀，由菅野洋子制作的音乐更是十分出色，游戏操作也十分简单。
6位主角有着不同的背景以及目标，在不断地航行中提升自己的名声，而游戏的整个故事也会在旅途之中慢慢呈现在玩家眼前，并且游戏剧情是极其开放的多线式，就算不按照剧情进行游戏，也能获得无穷的乐趣，这也正是《大航海时代2》的魅力所在。
