与三年前的前作相比，《三国志3》的进化程度可谓翻天覆地：4色画面到16色画面的跃进，16色的巧妙搭配带来了细腻的地图地形效果；更为惊人的是，本作的战争场面采用仿3D动画，让本身极为枯燥的战斗过程一下子充满了无穷的魄力。音乐上本作也首次摆脱了之前的模拟效果音，采用MIDI音效。
